Many people use the terms Seaman and Seafarer interchangeably, but they are not the same. Let’s clear the confusion
⬇️Seaman
Usually refers to ratings like Ordinary Seaman (OS) or Able Seaman (AB)
Historically a specific rank, not a gender label
Commonly used in casual talk or naval ranking
Though it sounds male-only, in law it includes both men and womenℹ️ Seafarer
Modern, professional, gender-neutral term
Covers everyone working at sea – officers, engineers, cadets, ratings, masters
The official term used in IMO, STCW, and MLC conventions
More inclusive and globally acceptedKey Takeaway:
Every Seaman is a Seafarer, but not every Seafarer is a Seaman.⭐️Save this post if you’ve ever been confused by the terms.
What do you usually say onboard – Seaman or Seafarer?
