During cadetship onboard, without proper orientation, it’s very easy to become a victim of life accident. Therefore, this article is to share more marine insight on 11 tasks which every deck cadet needs to know, and the safety precautions to take.

- Navigation Watch – During navigation watch deck cadet will assist with position fixing, logbooks filling, lookouts, steering, and bridge routines. It’s very important to pay closer attention to each and every senior officer’s duty, because it’s your best chance to observe and absorb.
- Inventory Control – Need to know how to keep records and know where things are kept. Mostly inventory of paints, PPE, and other safety equipment.
- Maintenance Work – To supervise maintenance job in future, you need to know how to do it. Therefore, chipping, painting, greasing will be your normal daily routine. It builds real world of seamanship and respect to the job in you.
- Soundings – Your daily routine will be freshwater tank levels checks, ballast or cargo tanks ullages. You will learn how to carry out tank soundings and readings. Accuracy is critical here.
- Deck cargo or Bunker Watch – During ship loading or bunkering operation, you need to know what to check, maintain or observe while on deck watch.
- Lifeboat Checks – Inspect of the boat. make report of missing items. Understand the launching system. You’ll likely be tested on this during your COC – Be ready.
- Fire Patrols -Fire stations check and records of extinguishers, escape routes observation daily. Officers who skip these routines fail drills. learn hard.
- Lifting Gears – Know your shackles, SWLs, safety pins. It’s part of deck gear knowledge.
- Mooring Operations – Be alert. Stay clear of snap back zones. Learn line handling and winch control. This is serious stuff which can lead to death onboard. Follow orders and be watchful.
- Toolbox Talks – Pay attention on how they’re done. Later, you’ll prepare your own in future.
- Filling Your TRB – Note your training record book (TRB) isn’t homework. It’s your career tracker. Update it weekly. Ask for feedback. Don’t leave it till the end. Ask questions while onboard, because when you sign a contract as an officers, you are required to give out, more you take in.
