• Not suitable for: oil, gas, or electrical fires - Foam Extinguisher
• Best for: Class A & B fires (solids & flammable liquids)
• Creates a barrier between the fire and oxygen - CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide)
• Best for: Electrical fires and flammable liquids (Class B)
• Leaves no residue – ideal for engine or control rooms - Dry Powder Extinguisher
• Suitable for: Classes A, B, and C (gases)
• Covers a wide area but leaves messy residue - Wet Chemical Extinguisher
• Specially made for: Class F fires (cooking oils and fats)
• Often used in galley or kitchen areas
Steps for Fire Fighting Onboard:
- Raise the alarm immediately
- Identify the type and location of the fire
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Use the correct extinguisher for the fire class
- Seal off compartments to contain smoke/fire spread
- Inform the bridge/captain ASAP
- If the fire is out of control: Prepare for evacuation – use Life Rafts
