  1. Water Extinguisher
    • Best for: Class A fires (wood, paper, textiles)
    • Not suitable for: oil, gas, or electrical fires
  2. Foam Extinguisher
    • Best for: Class A & B fires (solids & flammable liquids)
    • Creates a barrier between the fire and oxygen
  3. CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide)
    • Best for: Electrical fires and flammable liquids (Class B)
    • Leaves no residue – ideal for engine or control rooms
  4. Dry Powder Extinguisher
    • Suitable for: Classes A, B, and C (gases)
    • Covers a wide area but leaves messy residue
  5. Wet Chemical Extinguisher
    • Specially made for: Class F fires (cooking oils and fats)
    • Often used in galley or kitchen areas

Steps for Fire Fighting Onboard:

  1. Raise the alarm immediately
  2. Identify the type and location of the fire
  3. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  4. Use the correct extinguisher for the fire class
  5. Seal off compartments to contain smoke/fire spread
  6. Inform the bridge/captain ASAP
  7. If the fire is out of control: Prepare for evacuation – use Life Rafts
