An emergency generator onboard a ship is a device that serve as a life line to a vessel when the main generator is out of power.
It helps to provide electrical power whenever the main generator is not working, to enable ships crew to regain ships power.
Emergency equipment attached to emergency generator switch board includes;
- Emergency air compressor
- Emergency fire pump
- one cooling water pump connected to emergency bilge suction ( incase of engine room flooding)
- Emergency lights
- Battery powered changing equipment
- Emergency plugs for electric usage during.
Onboard some ships you many find two or more ways to start emergency generator, however there’s two major modes; Battery powered and manual hydraulic charged mode.

Note, before turning on the blackout stimulation switch, select manual mode on the main selector , start the engine manually with any of the above starting methods, then make sure the main selector is kept on auto mode.
